03 Sep Weekend Find: Butterfly Fabric
This past weekend, I ventured out for the first time in a month in search of fabric. One of my all-time favorite fabric stores is Home Fabrics & Rugs. (really this place deserves a post all its own – note to self) If you don’t have one near you, I’m so sorry; however, I have known people who have FLOWN to a different city to shop at one. Yes, it is that good.
Why is it so great? Well, imagine a huge store full of fabrics (many of which are notable manufacturers), where nothing is over $12.99 a yard. It can be hit and miss, but I stumbled across this, and I was immediately drawn to it.
It is a cotton print, and the colors are vibrant, but not too vibrant. The butterflies are very well done – interesting yet delicate. Then I noticed it was a West Elm fabric.
I looked it up, but apparently, West Elm discontinued it. They used it as an option for one of their Veronica chairs.
There is a great color story here! Do you use these little color dots on the selvage of fabric? They are so helpful in making sure you are staying on track with a room, especially if you are not confident in your decision making.
The best part of this particular fabric is that it is railroaded, which means the fabric pattern runs horizontally, instead of vertically. Now if you want to make drapes, railroaded fabric is clearly not a good choice, but for upholstery, it is mwah perfect. (no seams)
Instantly, I envisioned this fabric on a uniquely shaped settee – something vintage or antique. Something like this (from Craigslist).
Wouldn’t that be so pretty? And kind of Anthropologie-esque? A real statement piece.
I went ahead and bought some yardage of it. It was too good to resist! We’ll see what ends up happening with it.
P.S. If you live in the DFW area, they still have a large bolt of this fabric at the Home Fabrics & Rugs near the Northeast Mall.

Calico Corners is a nice store, too! You should definitely check out HF&R though if you ever get the chance.

Posted at 02:17h, 05 SeptemberYeah, it can be awesome, or it can just be okay. It’s always worth the trip though. Every once in awhile, they will have double width fabrics which is great for upholstery and extra wide windows!
