25 Apr Sheets On A Sofa
My friend Kat introduced me to the blog, Dreamy Whites, a year or so ago. It is pretty to look at, and I appreciate the warm, cozy feeling her look creates. She also has a love for Mrs. Meyers Lavender Laundry Detergent that I totally understand – it is amazing. What intrigued me most about her blog, and I have thought about it many a time since, was how she uses antique linen sheets. She makes lavender sachets, she upholsters (she did the chair below), she makes pillows, she uses them to cover her down duvet…
But she uses them mostly for her sofa! She has a long white slipcovered sofa whose slipcover she “washes twice a year”. The rest of the time, it is draped in the antique linens, and she washes them once a week. Now, sheets on your sofa may not strike your fancy, but it looks really comfy and inviting to me.
A white sheet from Target over a rumply couch is messy and not at all interesting, but I think the history and texture of the antique linen tells a different story. I have an antique linen tablecloth with a scalloped edge and I L-O-V-E love it! Since my plan is to have a white couch in our room addition, I may play around with this. Although I think I should add, a room has to have a particular feel to pull this off. I don’t think it needs to be totally shabby, but if you have a room full of contemporary furniture, don’t throw a sheet over it, and call it a day.
What are your thoughts? Is this pretty to you or strange? Would you do it in your home?

Posted at 17:38h, 25 AprilWell, I would absolutely do it. Come to think of it, I have some light blankets draped over my sofa right now. It is just easier with kids. Take it off and throw it in the wash. It makes life a little more relaxed. I do have two cream sofas (one slip-covered, the other upholstered) and I would highly recommend the slip-covered option. But if something does happen to the upholstered kind my method of cleaning is a bowl of warm water, baking soda, gentle fabric detergent and a bristle brush. I have really durable twill upholstery, so the brush doesn’t hurt it. I scrub the whole area and softly blend the wet area out, so as to not leave a ring. Then I use a clean white towel, and blot as dry as I can, then let it air dry. This has worked for me on stubborn stains from coffee, avocado, sauce … yes, we eat while sitting on our sofas. Make sure you check out Dreamy Whites beautiful hand-made lavender sachets! I want several for my laundry room, drawers, and … well … everywhere else.

This illustrates to me the challenges of seeing something in a magazine and making it work in your home. Very tough sometimes!!! I have used sheets for window treatments, etc. and they truly have always ended up looking like sheets!!:)
