31 Jul RIP Sunbrella Velvet
Did you gasp when you read the subject of this post? Did you exclaim “NOOOOOOOOOOOO” at your computer? Unfortunately, I have received word that our beloved Sunbrella velvet has been discontinued.
’tis true, tis true, ’tis pity, and pity ’tis, ’tis true.
If you have ever held a sample of this fabric, you know how heavy and well made it is. (I have seen it in fabric stores at $200 a yard) Needless to say, it is expensive to make and requires an intense process. Sunbrella has had a difficult time weaving it, so they will no longer be producing it.
There is still yardage available in warehouses across America, so if you think this is what you want, I would snatch it up asap. This store is still my go-to source for the velvet because of their unbeatable price. But I did find another online source for this velvet, and although their price is a little more, their customer service is terrific. They don’t have the Sunbrella velvet on their site so you have to call to order it. (If you order from either of these stores, please tell them I sent you.)
Sunbrella did say they are looking for a new manufacturer, so there is a sliver of hope.
Meanwhile, pet owners, eat-on-the-couch-ers, and mothers across America let out a collective groan at the loss of elegant, easy-to-clean velvet upholstery.

Posted at 08:15h, 31 JulyNOOOO! This is terrible. I had this source all bookmarked for future projects. Would it be crazy of me to order a bunch with no use in mind?

Posted at 08:20h, 31 JulyTiffany, I was telling someone about this yesterday, and that is exactly what she went home and did! I don’t think it is crazy at all! There is not very much yardage left of that peacock blue color, so I am tempted to order a bunch of that myself!
We can be crazy together. 🙂

Posted at 08:17h, 31 JulyOh no! I just reupholstered a couch for our dining room in tan Sunbrella velvet! And I love it..,
Will try to snap it up now for future projects. Thanks for the heads up!

You are so welcome, and I think that is a good idea!

Posted at 15:19h, 31 JulyI was thinking of using this velvet for my couch but not sure about the color. Basically I’m looking for a medium neutral greige and thinking I might not have enough time to order the sample. How did the tan work for you and has anyone used or seen the taupe in person? Please anyone help – I’m feeling pressured to make a decision ASAP!

Posted at 15:38h, 31 JulyHi Tara, I just spent the last little while searching my house for this sample (taupe) so I could send it to you! But I can’t find it. However, if you are looking for a greige fabric, I think you will like the taupe better than the tan. The taupe is really pretty – a little brown, a little grey, a little tan. Good luck, hope that helps! G

Posted at 00:07h, 09 AugustThanks for the recommendation. I ordered the fabric from your “secret source” and received it in 4 days. The color is perfect. Thanks for the heads up or I probably would have missed the boat with this incredible fabric. It has a great feel and will be perfect since I have a 2, 4 and 5 year old.

Posted at 08:25h, 31 JulyGah. I just ordered and received 20 yards of sunbrella velvet for my couch. It’s beautiful. And was planning to do more things with other colours in the future. (Insert whimper here).

Posted at 08:30h, 31 JulyMargaret, can you hear my whimper, too? 😉 Send me a photo of your sofa, I would love to see it! Can’t wait to see which color you got. 😉

Posted at 12:00h, 31 JulyI had no idea! Want this fabric for my next sofa in my next home. May have to order now too!
Grace
Posted at 12:12h, 31 JulyEmily, probably a good idea, especially since we don’t know if it will come back! Make sure it is a color you LOVE and have loved for a long time though. No buyer’s regret! 🙂

Posted at 13:01h, 25 JulyI just stumbled upon your blog while looking for durable velvet fabric options to reupholster my vintage sofa…and I’m so sad to see this! I was really getting excited for a minute 🙁 I clicked on the links you recommended, and while there is suprisingly quite a bit of Sunbrella velvet to choose from, I didn’t see a navy or more cobalt blue. Do you have any recommendations for a navy velvet durable fabric? I’m hoping to find something that stands up to my dog’s claws, and from what I’ve read, velvet seems to be a miracle 🙂
I’m so happy I found you!!
