09 Aug From Closet to Laundry Room PLUS $500 Home Depot Gift Card Giveaway
Hello Everyone, it feels good to be writing to you so thank you for being here today! Not only am I super excited to share my laundry room makeover with you today, but I have a $500 HOME DEPOT GIFT CARD TO GIVE AWAY TO ONE OF YOU LUCKY LOVELIES!!! Wahoo!
Let’s get started, shall we?
Say hello to what this space looked like before. We don’t have a true laundry room, and the washer and dryer were formerly located in the basement in this home. Can you imagine lugging baskets of clothes for six people up and down the basement stairs? Ugh. Plus the basement is…weird.
So part of this closet became “the laundry room”. This is my husband’s closet, and it needs an organizational makeover in and of itself, but one step at a time. The closet is lined with cedar planks, and is in pretty much its original condition from 1921. For an older home, this is rather a large closet so it was easy to borrow a few feet from it to create a nook for the washer and dryer in the new space.
There was a teensy tinesy closet that opened up from the upstairs landing so we knocked out its wall on the right (borrowing from Kent’s closet) to create that nook for the washer and dryer.
In our house before this one, our washer and dryer were side by side, and I thought I was going to have to get a new stackable washer and dryer. My friend, Emily (thanks girl!), told me I could buy a stacking kit for my washer/dryer, and my problem was solved. Duh, a stacking kit!! Genius! I used this one, but Home Depot has them for all of your favorite brands.
Making a closet feel…well, not like a closet was my primary goal. I spend some decent time in this small space so I wanted it to feel light and pretty. Feeling inspired by this iconic laundry room, the idea for the chinoiserie wallpaper was born.
The cedar planks were drywalled and painted. I used some leftover creamy paint for the walls, and a barely there blue for the ceiling. I looked to one of my favorite sources for antique wallpapers and purchased one roll. That was all I needed!
Wallpapering the whole closet would have been too overwhelming, and with no natural light, this could turn into a dark space. Keeping the walls creamy, and just using the wallpaper on the back wall gave me all the impact I needed. (P.S. I pretty much always use this wallpaper paste.)
I used leftover scraps for the insets of the cabinets, and I just love how this brings the look together. Using wallpaper this way adds such a chicness to the space. (I did this to the doors in my dining room, too.) The blue/green knobs are from Anthropologie. Little spaces like this lend themselves to the utilization of fun hardware.
One of my favorite stories from this makeover would have to be how the quartz countertop came to be. I knew I wanted a quartz countertop because quartz is super durable, anti bacterial, and overall awesome. I had my color picked out, but there was a problem. This small countertop was going to be over $400. No bueno. However, I stepped into my local Restore looking for something else, and in a dark corner, leaning against the wall, I saw some old countertops. I started going through them, and of course, most of them were pretty yucky. But then, THEN, I saw it. It was a long piece of my EXACT COLOR OF QUARTZ countertop marked…wait for it, $75. It was way more counter than I needed, and one of the ends was badly damaged, and the other end had a sink hole cut out, but the middle was perfect. A few feet was all I needed, so I snatched it up. Okay, I lifted one end, while the guy who worked there lifted the other end, and we loaded it. Providence, I tell you, providence.
After having some simple cabinetry made, my little folding counter came together. I used one side for some sorting baskets, and the other side to house laundry room necessities.
Because laundry soap and dryer sheets look much prettier in glass jars, I used them to decorate my counter.
Along with a vintage painting found at an estate sale to cover an electrical outlet (signed “Mitchell” no less), a jar of vintage sewing notions, and a silver tray to collect buttons, my surface was pretty enough to make me happy, and simple enough that there was plenty of room for folding.
I’m really happy with how my laundry closet has transformed, but I still have some future plans. Like building a shelf to fill this side space next to and above the washer and dryer. Valuable storage here, and as we all know, inches count when you have a small space to work with.
I also think this wall on the left needs art or maybe one of those fold out drying racks??
The floor is an eyesore, and I think I’m going to paint it eventually. (Do you see the laundry soap spill stain?) For now, a brightly colored rug I purchased from Joss & Main hides most of its imperfections.
Now for the extra happy part, if you have your own laundry room makeover to do or any other house project, I have a $500 Home Depot gift card to give away! Plus some Tide samples!
I’m going to give you a few ways to enter, and you may use all of them if you like. Obviously, the more entries you have, the better your chances are. Just leave a comment for each avenue you use.

Posted at 12:05h, 09 AugustI love it! We are going to relocate our laundry room to make room for a kitchen remodel and the space alocated for the laundry room is very small. I am gathering lots of space saver ideas to make the most of the area before the project gets started. Where do you iron? That is one of my dilemmas.
Grace
Posted at 12:12h, 09 AugustHi Courtney, I hear ya. I have the same problem, and I have actually been pondering using this gadget.

Or there’s this little guy so you can move it around as needed.

Right now, if I iron, I take my basket and the board to our office, which is where the television is located. 🙂 I’d love to see your space when you are done!

Posted at 12:43h, 09 AugustI have the ironing board in your first link and I love it.
Grace
Posted at 12:46h, 09 AugustOh good to know, Anon! I’ve been eyeing that one!

Posted at 12:05h, 09 AugustHi Grace! What a great flip of a space in your home. I really like all of your personnel touches that makes your house a home for your family. Thanks for sharing yet another successful redo. Love your “merry heart”… :0)
Grace

Posted at 12:11h, 09 AugustThis looks fantastic Grace! I’m glad you’re feeling better and were able to post these beautiful pictures. My laundry area really needs some TLC so I love that you brought a bit of glamour to the space with the Chinoiserie wallpaper- it’s inspirational!
Grace
Posted at 12:13h, 09 AugustThanks so much, Trisha! Yes, it was a challenge to make this space feel less closet-y, more pretty! The wallpaper was really the game changer, I think.
Beth Dolloff
Posted at 12:11h, 09 AugustBeautiful work! I need some major help in the laundery room! Love the wallpaper, great choice. Hope your feeling better since your surgery 🙂
Grace
Posted at 12:15h, 09 AugustHi Beth, I am feeling better. My one week checkup yesterday (and bandage removal) revealed a rather large hematoma on my stomach which was mildly depressing, but it could be worse! I go back Tuesday to hopefully have it fixed. I’m still resting up, but I feel stronger for sure! Thank you!

Posted at 12:14h, 09 AugustWhat a great way to convert a small space to a very functional area! I love the idea of dispalying vintage sewing notions. I have some very vintage wooden spools of “button hole twist” thread that I can show off in a glass jar. I wonder how many people have ever heard of or used that type thread? I am dating myself!!!
Grace
Posted at 12:17h, 09 AugustMelinda, I am googling that. 🙂 I LOVE wooden spools, and I always pick them up when I see them. It’s a simple decoration that makes me feel happy when I’m folding away. 🙂
Jacqueline Schneider
Posted at 12:15h, 09 AugustI love your laundry room! Perfect size space and sooo functional. And… not surprisingly beautiful 😉
Grace
Posted at 12:18h, 09 AugustSweet Jacqueline, thank you! It was good to get that counter top cleaned off for these photos, ha! xoxo
Stella Bionda
Posted at 12:22h, 09 AugustSo cute! I LOVE the vintage wallpaper and the cute little jars full of thread spindles. I’ve been looking into transforming a room in my home into a work space. I’ve started up my own artsy business and my current workspace is the kitchen table! My new space will need to feel relaxing and inspirational. I’m definitely going to use some of these ideas…. 😉
Thanks for sharing!
Grace
Posted at 12:49h, 09 AugustStella, congrats on your new business! Gotta love working from home and your office being your kitchen table. 🙂 Good luck on creating a space that you love, inspires you, and makes you happy!
Grace
Posted at 13:08h, 09 AugustLove your name by the way.
Susan M.
Posted at 12:39h, 09 AugustWhat a beautiful little space! I might even enjoy doing the laundry if I could carry my baskets into a laundry room that looked like this. Who am I kidding… yeah that’s not going to happen any time soon!
So glad to hear you’re recovering and thanks so much for the opportunity!
Grace
Posted at 12:50h, 09 AugustSusan, when I have a space that overwhelms me in its awfulness, I try to change a few little small things, and it makes it so much better. Rather than disliking the space so much, I tend to focus on that one little thing I did.
Good luck. 🙂
Anna
Posted at 13:07h, 09 AugustWhat a great looking laundry spot. Mine is in garage and trying to figure out how to make it work in the house! Thanks for the ideas!
Grace
Posted at 13:10h, 09 AugustThanks Anna! In our first house, our laundry was in the garage, and it worked okay. The bad part was doing laundry in the summer heat! Good luck, G 🙂

Posted at 13:15h, 09 AugustGlad you are feeling better! Good to know about converting side by side w/d to stackable–brilliant!
Grace
Posted at 13:23h, 09 AugustOh Molly, I’m so glad someone else didn’t know that existed. 🙂

Posted at 13:18h, 09 AugustLove this laundry room–great job!

Posted at 13:30h, 09 AugustThis transformation is amazing! And, I love the idea of putting soap and dryer sheets in a glass jars.
Really, this is a winner from start to finish!
Grace
Posted at 13:50h, 09 AugustThanks Emily! Yes, the jars definitely add some much needed glam!
Nina
Posted at 13:42h, 09 AugustGreat space. It’s so light and cheery!
I have my laundry in a small closet, but it’s not a walk-in. I added a big piece of melamine to the top of my side-by-sides to create a countertop (similar to John and Sherry here: http://www.younghouselove.com/2007/11/spin-city/) but I’d love to wallpaper the back of it. What condition does the wall have to be in to wallpaper? I need to check, because I think my wall may be textured back there and if so, do I just sand it down to get it smooth before wallpapering? I’ve never wallpapers, I hear it’s a marriage tester, so I think tackling a small wall is a good way to start.
Grace
Posted at 13:54h, 09 AugustHi Nina, neat! Yeah, wallpaper needs a pretty smooth surface. However, with thicker wallpapers like sisal and grasscloth, you can get away with more texture. (which I have totally done 🙂 ) Sanding or skimming walls to make them smooth is not so terrible though, especially if it is one wall. I actually have a DIY coming up on this as I had to smooth the terrible texture on my kitchen walls. 🙂

Posted at 13:54h, 09 AugustLove this space, so light and airy feeling I don’t think I would mind having to spend time folding clothes in there at all. I would add a drying rack for sure on that side wall. I am sure you could find something vintage looking that would look just like it belongs there. I am kinda digging something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Madison-mounted-Laundry-Drying-WHITE/dp/B00160R71S/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hg_4
It’s a little costly though, but I think it could easily be replicated by someone handy. 🙂 I am looking for something along these lines for my own laundry room and just may give it a try.
Hope you will be back to 100% soon, continue to take it easy!
Grace
Posted at 13:56h, 09 AugustSheri, I have actually looked at that one and think it is so cute! It would make for an interesting DIY, my wheels are turning! 🙂
Thanks so much for the well wishes, I’m feeling better today!

Posted at 13:56h, 09 AugustI love this! Our laundry room is in the basement and needs some major sprucing up!

Meg
Posted at 13:57h, 09 AugustGood job. Grace! My laundry is in my garage, so a different set of challenges altogether…but I have hope of sprucing the laundry corner of my garage up & making it happier!
Grace
Posted at 14:01h, 09 AugustMeg, I used to have a laundry room in the garage on our first house! It was not so bad except for the heat in the summer, and the cold in the winter. 🙂 Looking back, I would have liked it better if there was an ounce of prettiness, which there was not. Just the smell and look of…garage. 🙂
Good luck!
