DIY Halloween Costume: Monogram Pirate Eye Patch

DIY Halloween Costume: Monogram Pirate Eye Patch

Ahoy matey!  Welcome to the fourth and final day of the DIY Halloween Costume series!  Today I have to present to you my favorite little pirate.  Not only is he wearing a super cute pirate costume from Pottery Barn Kids, he is also donning a homemade pirate eye patch made by yours truly.  Let’s get to the DIY so you can make one of your own for your pirate or piratess.  (piratess = girl pirate)

Gather your materials for the project which are easy to find at your local craft store (or in my case, your craft cabinet).

1.  Cut a rather irregular circle from your black felt.  Note on the black felt I used:  For this project, I used a rather stiff felt that has more of “hard” feel than your regular floppy felt.  This helps your eye patch be more sturdy, but a piece of cardboard between two pieces of regular felt works just as well.  I free-handed my eye patch circle and held it up to my pirate to make sure it would fit.

I layered one piece of felt over the other and then cut so I would have two pieces for my eye patch.

2.  Cut a piece of elastic that is a little smaller than your pirate’s head.  Place some hot glue on the side of the eye patch that you want to touch your pirate’s face.  (Since I used the sparkly felt, I made sure the back side of the felt would be against my pirate’s face since those sparkles are kind of scratchy.)  Then place two dots of hot glue on either side of the eye patch and press the ends of the elastic down.  (make sure your elastic is turned correctly to make the correct circle around your pirate’s head)

Place your other eye patch on top and press firmly, making especially sure that the edges where the elastic is attached are secured.

3.  Choose the first letter of your child’s name or the first letter of your last name (whichever you prefer), and draw it on your colored felt.  I used this pirate font – the letter “T”.

After you have drawn your letter (make sure to draw it a little bigger than you want it so you can cut inside the lines, thus no pen marks on your letter), cut it out.

4.  Attach your letter to your eye patch using a thin line of hot glue, and you are ready!  Arrrrrr!!

The details on the pirate costume from Pottery Barn Kids are really nice.  I love the gold buttons and the leather threading at the neckline!
