03 Jan Barneby Gates Wallpapers
There are few things that make me as happy as discovering something beautiful, especially something someone has poured their artistic energy into. So you can imagine how I felt when I happened upon UK-based Barneby Gates wallpapers. They are gorgeous, gorgeous, incredibly designed pieces of art. And it’s no wonder when you read the resumes of Vanessa Barneby (left) and Alice Gates (right).
“Ex Vogue Living Editor, Vanessa Barneby graduated from Edinburgh University in 1999 and went on to study decorative painting, trompe l’oeil and restoration at Hampstead Decorative Arts in London. Her passion for furniture, textiles and print led to a position as an interiors stylist at House & Garden for 5 years. From 2004 until 2009 Vanessa was the Living Editor at British Vogue where predicting and writing about upcoming trends in design, styling shoots, and examining the correlation between fashion and interiors were all part of her job.”
“A fellow Edinburgh graduate, Alice Gates went on to study figurative painting overseas before achieving a Masters in Fine Art at The City & Guilds of London Art School. Her vivid, often narrative paintings, rooted in fashion illustration, have been exhibited worldwide and featured in numerous publications including Vogue, Tatler and The Saturday Times Magazine. She has also collaborated with the fashion label Libelula, designing prints for their ready-to-wear collections.”
Clearly, these two come together as quite the dynamic creative duo. Their art form is clear and defined in their papers which are printed “at one of the few remaining print works in the Midlands”. (central England) Their designs are also easy on the environment – from their “Our Story” page,
“All the papers we use are PEFC accredited. This is the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification and is a mark of forest stewardship that shows the paper comes from well-managed sources.”
Here are a few of my favorites:
Chairs – $126.77 (USD) a roll
Horse Trellis – Acid on Grey – $126.77 (USD) a roll
Boxing Hares – $126.77 (USD) a roll
Do you see how the pattern is created? How amazing would this be in a nursery?!
Typecast – you can also get this in the “Bespoke” pattern where you can customize what letters/words are highlighted – $126.77 (USD) a roll
Deer Damask – $126.77 (USD) a roll

Can you believe how deliciously well done these are? I can’t help but vouch for their customer service. I emailed for some samples, and lickety split, I heard from Vanessa herself. Or that’s what the email address said – I realize it could be her assistant, but it’s cooler to think it was her, right? 😉 Two weeks later, I received a thick envelope from the UK containing the samples, and let me tell you, they are out of this world. Yes, I realize they are expensive, but they could easily stand on their own as an accent wall or make a small space come alive.
You can see all of their papers here. Which is your favorite?

Posted at 13:02h, 13 JanuaryHi Victoria, I am CRAZY for these papers, too! I am actually using the Deer Damask in Claret for a client’s powder bath, and I am nearly giddy over it! I’m pondering how to sneak in one of these into my house, too! Thanks so much for reading!
